Abstract [sv]
Abstract This report describes the VHDL implementation of a communication protocol to be used on FPGA’s. The purpose is to handle transfers of video. The system consists of a master node that has a screen connected to it. The master node is communicating with a number of camera nodes through a fiber optic ring net. The communication protocol consists of two parts. One part is designed for use on the camera node and the other one is for the master node. The data transfer is serial and occur asynchronically. Over sampling is used when reading incoming data. The camera is controlled by instructions which are sent as control packets. The system can handle up to 15 camera nodes. This is omitted by the number of bits in the destination part and source part of the header. Different types of fiber optic cables have been evaluated. Communication protocol in general and the MOST communication protocol have been looked in to. The progress of the work that has been done is described in steps. The different parts of the communication protocol are described with flow schematics. A test on the system has been performed during the development process and data transfer rate has been calculated. Tests were ASCII signs were sent from a computer through two FPGA´s and then displayed on a second computer has been performed. Maximum data transfer ratio has been calculated to 24.8 Mbit/s.
