Abstract [en]

The Degree Dissertation Project is carried out on account of Tetra Recart AB in Lund, a company affiliated with the Tetra Pak Group. The company develops retortable cartons for the food industry, aiming to compete with, and eventually replace, the traditional tin can as storage container. Our task is to design a portable device for pressure testing of the 400 ml-cartons manufactured by the company. During the test, a cut-in-half carton is to be fixed in an air tight holding mechanism and subjected to an internal pressure in order to check the seals. A number of different solutions were developed and then systematically narrowed down to a single concept. The final solution is a holding mechanism based on the principle of rubber deformation. By compressing two o-rings and clamping the carton between them, the container is successfully secured in an air-tight grip. Our design offers quick and reliable testing with great user-friendliness.
