Abstract [sv]

No one can ignore the fact that the recession has affected large companies both in Sweden and the rest of Europe. Weekly press releases tell us that companies are forced to let people go. Small companies are by no means isolated from this phenomenon. An example of this is the GGVV-region (Gislaved, Gnosjö, Vaggeryd, Värnamo), that despite its history of low unemployment rate and high small-company density, also has been affected. The problem is that the managers of small companies are not aware of how to react in a situation of a crisis. This report deals with how companies handle workforce withdrawals. The purpose of this report is to create an understanding for what the managers of small companies need to focus on during periods of withdrawal. The report is based on three qualitative case studies and illuminates four different types of aspects a managers of small companies need to observe: the lack of crisis awareness, the importance of the information, not to loose his professional role and the lack of focus on the remaining staff. The report will hopefully make the managers of small companies realise the importance of a well-accomplished withdrawal and more aware of crises management. Furthermore, the authors hope that other researchers will be inspired to work on this subject, since the literature does not offer much related to this subject.
