Aphasics´ views of the encounter with other people: A grounded theory analysis

2000 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
Abstract [en]
Being affected by aphasia influences the total life. The aim of this study was to generate a theoretical model, from a nursing perspective, of what aphasics (N=12) experience of the encounter with other people. Data was collected through interview questions based on a biophysical, socio-cultural and psychological approach and analysed using the grounded theory method. Two main categories amerged: interaction and support. The experiences were: a feeling of having ability; a feeling of being an outsider; and a feeling of dejection or uncertainty, depending on wether the interaction was obstructed or secure and wether the support recieved resulted in strengthened or impaired self-esteem. Nurses need to give support that enhances the patients´ self-esteem and results in a positive and realistic view of the aphasic, as well as involving those around them in this. This will give possibilities for the patient to turn the interaction process from an obstructed into a secure one.
