Abstract [en]
The thesis investigates the factors influencing the adoption of agricultural innovations in apple farming in Jammu and Kashmir from the perspectives of technological, organisational, and environmental dimensions. Using the Agricultural Systems of Innovation (ASI) Theory, Technology-Organisation-Environment (TOE) framework, and Institutional Theory, the study examines barriers like high costs, technical complexity, absence of infrastructure, and sociocultural resistance In terms of adoption, qualitative data were collected through 10 newly conducted semi-structured interviews (5 farmers and 5 agricultural officers). These interviews replaced a previous set of 15, following changes in the theoretical framework and interview design. where farmers are good at adopting, they have access to credit, training, and to a policy that is efficient enough to sustain and maintain agriculture. The paper contributes to theory by merging several frameworks to better explain the adoption of innovation and offers practical advice to policymakers, which includes subsidising entrepreneurship, infrastructure development, and gender inclusive extension services. Beyond analysis, this study innovates by proposing context-specific, technology-enabled interventions, such as an efficient system for improving agricultural processes and gender-responsive training models, to systemically enhance sustainability and competitiveness. In future research, context-specific interventions could help to improve sustainability in apple farming in the region. Thus, the results call for stakeholder collaborations to create an enabling environment for the adoption of innovation.
