Nurses' experiences of facilitators and barriers for caring for patients affected by sepsis : A general literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that requires earlyrecognition and rapid treatment. Despite well established guidelines, sepsis-related mortality remains high, indicating challenges in providing optimalnursing care. Aim: The aim was to explore nurses’ experiences of facilitators and barrierswhen caring for patients (over 18 years of age) in the acute phase of sepsis. Method: A general literature review based on ten peer-reviewed articlespublished between 2021 and 2025. Both qualitative and quantitative studieswere included and analyzed inductively, and the results were organizedthematically. Results: Seven main themes were identified: clinical experience, evidence-based tools, communication and collaboration, patient-related factors, competence and education, organizational and structural factors and policyand decision-making. Inexperience, lack of resources, poor communication, complex clinical presentation, lack of knowledge, high workload an legalrestrictions emerged as barriers, while clinical experience, evidence-basedscreening tools, teamwork, objective communication and continuouseducation, and structured routines facilitated quality of care. Conclusion: Continuous education, effective communication, interprofessional collaboration and organizational structures are essential tostrengthen nurses’ ability to provide timely, evidence-based, and patient-centered care for individuals affected by sepsis. Future research shouldfocus on how education, digital decision support, and leadership can bedeveloped to further strengthen the role of the nurse and improve patientoutcomes in sepsis.
