Nurses’ experiences of working under confidentiality in nursing care : A general literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Nurses have a professional responsibility to promote a strong safety culture in nursing care by working in accordance with confidentiality and professional secrecy. Maintaining the patient’s integrity intact is a complex task that is often jeopardized during various nursing interventions. Aim: The aim of this literature review was to describe nurses’ experiences of working under confidentiality and professional secrecy in nursing care. Method: A general literature review with an inductive approach was conducted, including 13 scientific articles retrieved from the databases CINAHL and PsycINFO. Results: The results present nurses’ experiences of working under confidentiality and professional secrecy in nursing care through five categories: The significance of knowledge and support for confidentiality work, The impact of communication on confidentiality and professional secrecy, The influence of the care environment on nurses’ work with confidentiality and professional secrecy, The influence of relatives on confidentiality and professional secrecy, and The impact of digitalization on confidentiality and professional secrecy. Conclusion: The findings of this literature review indicate a need for educational support in the workplace regarding confidentiality and professional secrecy, as nurses express a wish for continuous knowledge development and guidance. The results also suggest that organizational conditions, such as the design of the care environment, may influence nurses’ ability to safeguard patient integrity in nursing practice. Furthermore, it is highlighted that clear guidelines and policies can be valuable as support in complex situations where both relatives and digital technology may affect the work with confidentiality.
