Nurses' experiences of person-centred care during healthcare encounters in digital systems : A litterature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The digitalisation of healthcare has created new opportunities for encounters between nurses and patients. At the same time, questions arise about how person-centred care is affected when the physical meeting is replaced by communication through digital systems. Aim: The aim of this literature study was to describe nurses’ experiences of person-centred care during healthcare encounters in digital systems. Method: The study was conducted as a general literature review with an inductive approach. Data were collected from the databases PubMed and CINAHL, resulting in twelve result articles that were quality-reviewed and analysed in different steps. Result: The results are presented in four categories: care encounters in digital systems are perceived to strengthen person-centred care, care encounters in digital systems require new strategies and competencies, organizational and technical challenges in digital care encounters and human and relational challenges in person-centred care during digital care encounters. The findings show that digital systems can both strengthen person-centred care by increasing accessibility, safety, and participation but also create communicative challenges for nurses and patients in maintaining their relationship. The nurse’s role changes through new technical and communicative demands which require organisational support and continuous competence development. Conclusion: Digital systems can serve as a valuable complement to traditional healthcare encounters but technology cannot replace the human connection that forms the core of person-centred care.
