Abstract [en]

A Resume Picture Says More Than a 1000 Words explores the impact of including a photo in a resume, which is a relevant question for job seekers. This quantitative study incorporates elements of comparative analysis between different versions of resumes, builds upon existing knowledge on the subject. The study is based on five fictional resumes: one without a photo, and four featuring photos of men and women portrayed as either professional or unprofessional. The male and female versions were combined in further analysis, as the study's purpose and research question do not aim to distinguish differences based on gender. The study employs a deductive approach, using Spence’s (1973) signaling theory as its theoretical framework. Five different surveys, each containing the aforementioned photos, were distributed via email, yielding 89 participants. The empirical data were analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). The results show that the resume without a photo received the highest mean score for perceived professionalism among all five resume variants. There was no statistical significance between the resume without a photo and those with professional photos. A total of 83.1% of the respondents believed that a resume should not include a photo. There was a noticeable statistically significant difference between the resumes featuring unprofessional photos and those with professional photos or no photo at all.

Abstract [sv]

Empirin har analyserats genom dataprogrammet SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).
