Language & Literature : A study of pre-conditions for an integrated Swedish subject (English)
Abstract [en]

This thesis examined the conditions for Swedish teachers to teach the subject of Swedish in an integrated way, where language and literature instruction are combined. The aim was to analyze how curricula and teaching materials over time have enabled or limited such teaching, as well as to highlight the didactic opportunities this provides for today’s Swedish teachers. The study was based on a curriculum analysis of the five upper secondary school curricula and an analysis of eight corresponding teaching materials. The results showed that the curricula displayed varying levels of regulation in terms of teaching methods and content, as well as shifts between a divided and an integrated view of the subject. The number of identified integrations in the teaching materials showed no clear connection to the subject view of the corresponding curriculum. However, a higher degree of integrations across more areas of overlap was identified in teaching materials where the corresponding curriculum had a lower level of regulation. Successful points of intersection identified for integrations between language and literature were: pragmatics, stylistics, and the history of the Swedish language. The conclusion was that the professional freedom of the Swedish teacher (and the textbook author) is crucial for the possibility of working with a greater variety of integrated teaching tasks.

Abstract [sv]

Detta examensarbete undersökte svensklärares förutsättningar att undervisa det svenska ämnet på ett integrerat sätt, där språk- och litteraturundervisning förenas. Syftet var att analysera hur styrdokument och läromedel över tid har möjliggjort eller begränsat en sådan undervisning, samt att belysa vilka didaktiska möjligheter detta ger för dagens svensklärare. Studien byggde på en läroplansanalys av de fem läroplanerna för gymnasieskolan samt en analys av åtta motsvarande läromedel. Resultatet var att läroplanerna visade varierande nivåer av styrning i undervisningens arbetssätt och innehåll samt ett växlande mellan en uppdelad och integrerad ämnessyn. Antalet identifierade integrationer genom läromedlen visade inget samband med motsvarande läroplans ämnessyn, däremot identifierades en högre grad av integrationer inom fler beröringsytor inom läromedel där motsvarande läroplan hade en lägre styrningsnivå. Framgångsrika beröringsytor som identifierades för integrationer mellan språk och litteratur var: pragmatik, stilistik och språkhistoria. Slutsatsen var att svensklärarens (och läromedelsförfattarens) professionella frihet är avgörande för möjligheten att arbeta med en större variation av integrerade undervisningsuppgifter.
