Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Blood donation is a vital part of healthcare in Sweden, where each unit of donated blood can be critical in saving lives. Despite this, the current blood donation process is inefficient, largely manual, and lacks national coordination. At present, only three percent of Sweden’s population are blood donors. This percentage needs to at least double to meet healthcare demands and strengthen society’s preparedness for future crises. This project addresses these challenges by proposing a national digital platform. The purpose of the platform is to streamline the blood donation process, strengthen blood supply, improve coordination, and increase engagement in blood donation. The target groups of the project are blood donors, blood center staff, and healthcare personnel who use the blood. Through a survey of 171 respondents, along with interviews with blood center staff and the GeBlod organization, several needs were identified. These included clearer information and digital tools for donors, better overviews of blood inventories, and improved national coordination for blood services.

The result of the project is LifeFlow, a user-centered digital platform that unifies all parts of the blood donation process within a single system. The platform has been developed with two prototypes: a technical prototype to verify the feasibility of the functions, and an interactive visual prototype to demonstrate the user interface. Development has taken place iteratively and in close collaboration with the target groups. LifeFlow offers features such as a digital health declaration, personal donation history, AI-based clear information, and the ability to donate blood as a guest donor. For blood services, the platform provides automated management and action proposals regarding the blood supply, as well as enhanced regional and national coordination. For healthcare providers, it offers streamlined ordering and returning of blood products. By implementing LifeFlow, the workload is expected to decrease, blood shortages can be prevented, and patient care improved. In the long term, LifeFlow can contribute to a more sustainable and efficient blood system and enhance national crisis preparedness. The platform creates better conditions for engaging and recruiting blood donors. It also optimizes resource use and ensures that blood is available where and when it is needed, while improving the user experience for both donors and healthcare professionals.
