Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study investigates seed germination, viability and dispersal strategies for two aliens shoreplants in Halland county: Hybrid skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanus x camtschatcensis) and Golden club (Orontium aquaticum). The seeds were studied through germination trials and vitality tests. The seeds were measured to explore whether the weight/height ratio effects germination. The hybrid skunk cabbage seeds proved to be mostly sterile. The seeds appeared to be empty and where therefore suspected to be nonviable, despite coloration through tetrazolium tests in the endosperm. The golden club seeds showed signs of life, through both early germination pre refrigeration and positive results when tested with tetrazolium. Despite this, the seeds did not germinate during experiments which was probably due to less-than-ideal storage conditions before any experiments were executed.

The hybrid skunk cabbage seeds in a small stream where longer than the seeds from the plant that grew in a pond, though the seeds did not differ in weight or weight/length-ratio. A significant correlation between seed diameter and weight was present for the golden club. The golden club seeds had a greater weight/length-ratio than hybrid skunk cabbage, and a greater weight/length-ratio has been beneficial for germination in other species. Further studies in seed dormancy and potential germination, especially for hybrid skunk cabbage, by parallel seed germination with one of or both parent species could give a clearer answer. Expanded monitoring of the area where golden club is present to include the bordering water environments could be a great tool to prevent the spread of golden club and hybrid skunk cabbage.
