Abstract [en]

The cost efficiency of district heating distribution is quantified in order to simplify the understanding of the concept of district heating. The analysis constitutes a continuation of the paper presented at the V IDHC in Kiev 1982 regarding the annual heat losses in district heating networks.

The capital cost due to distribution is evaluated by using two characteristic parameters: The average pipe diameter of the distribution network and the specific heat production (the heat supplied to the distribution network per meter of double-pipe length). The analysis is examplified by presenting combinations of the two characteristic parameters for 42 Swedish district heating systems. A comparison of systems in operation and systems planned is performed. The method presented may be applied when new systems are planned, at long distance heat transports, and in normal operation analyses in order to facilitate a general survey of the concept of district heating.

A fundamental conclusion is that a high relative distribution loss implies a high specific capital cost for the distribution network, since the two characteristic parameters affect the distribution loss and the distribution cost in a similar way.
