Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Vacuum mattresses are essential tools in emergency medical care, particularly for the transport and immobilization of patients with suspected spinal injuries or critical conditions such as cardiac arrest. Despite their crucial role, current models have limitations that impact both patient safety and the working environment of healthcare professionals. Common issues include insufficient support for the upper spine, limited functionality in confined spaces, and inadequate user-friendliness, which can hinder fast and secure handling. These shortcomings become especially apparent in situations where elevators are unavailable or when patients must be transported via stairs, scenarios that place high demands on the equipment.

EasyFix Split represents a new generation of vacuum mattress, developed to meet future challenges and needs. With a focus on enhanced usability, improved fixation of the upper spine, and reduced reliance on additional equipment, its design aims to make patient transport more efficient under demanding conditions. The development process was iterative and based on AB Germa's previous model, EasyFix Plus II R2G. A combination of user interviews, active participation, and practical testing informed the creation of a new physical prototype. This prototype was evaluated according to the SS-EN 1865 standard, meeting all requirements except for the deformation test. Nevertheless, the results were considered promising and formed the basis for further design improvements and development.

Beyond functional enhancements, the project also addressed aspects of sustainability, working conditions, and material use. EasyFix Split is designed to reduce physical strain on ambulance personnel and minimize the overall material requirements in emergency situations, contributing to more resource-efficient and sustainable practices.

With its improved ergonomics, usability, and potential to replace multiple existing tools in emergency care, EasyFix Split represents a step toward safer, simpler, and more sustainable solutions for urgent patient transport.
