Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
This study aims to deepen the understanding of how primary school teachers navigate the balance between analog and digital learning resources in reading and writing instruction during the early years of education. The research builds upon a previous literature review conducted in the first part of the degree project and now extends into an empirical investigation through a questionnaire study. The questionnaire, which included semi-structured questions, was distributed to teachers across three different municipalities. The questions were designed to address two overarching research questions:
- How do teachers describe the balance between analog and digital learning resources in reading and writing instruction?
- What factors influence teachers’ perceptions of and strategies for integrating analog and digital resources in early education grades F-3?
The results indicate that teachers interpret the concept of balance in diverse ways. Many respondents emphasize that analog instruction should form the foundational basis, particularly in the early grades, where students first need to develop fine motor skills and acquire the basic reading and writing abilities before digital tools are introduced as complementary resources. However, the study also highlights that digital resources can be introduced earlier in cases of specific educational needs, to support the development of individual students. Teachers report primarily using digital tools as supportive instruments for example, in modeling activities where students can both see and hear, which enhances learning. Digitalization is also seen as a potential avenue for increased inclusion, as it allows for more varied instruction that can address a broader range of student needs. The majority of teachers agree that the integration of digital resources into analog instruction offers expanded educational opportunities.
Nevertheless, several challenges associated with digitalization in schools are also noted. These include limited access to technological resources, technical difficulties, and a lack of professional development on how to effectively implement digital tools. Such obstacles hinder the practical realization of the intentions set forth in the 2022 national curriculum, which mandates the integration of digital tools in teaching. These factors significantly impact the ability to achieve a functional balance between analog and digital approaches. In conclusion, the study finds that teachers are generally positive toward the use of digital learning resources provided they are employed in a deliberate manner that complements and enhances analog instruction, with the overarching goal of supporting students’ learning and development, and assuming the necessary conditions for successful implementation are in place.
