Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to use a qualitative method to examine immigrants' pathways to the labor market and the factors that influenced or hindered their entry. The study identified these obstacles and opportunities through the collection of empirical data from eight respondents. The goal was to gain a deeper understanding of how individuals with foreign backgrounds attempt to enter and establish themselves in the Swedish labor market.  Some respondents perceived language as an opportunity that facilitated integration. For others, language posed a barrier, as certain professions required a specific level of language proficiency or education. The experiences of the immigrants were analyzed using Bourdieu’s theories of social and cultural capital, Durkheim’s theory of structural functionalism, and Goffman’s theory of stigma related to social exclusion.  The study revealed varying experiences among the respondents. Some had a positive and relatively smooth start in the labor market, while others faced greater challenges. These differences were partly due to language barriers and educational background. A common correlation among all respondents was that their motivation and attitude toward work played a crucial role in their ability to enter the labor market.
