Denna studie undersöker hur barnfria kvinnor i övre medelåldern har upplevt sitt livsval genom livet, och hur de förhåller sig till samhälleliga föreställningar kring barnfrihet. Syftet är att skapa en djupare förståelse för kvinnornas individuella upplevelser och erfarenheter i relation till samhällets normer, samt att synliggöra hur de själva ser på föreställningarna om ånger, ensamhet och ett meningsfullt liv.  Studien utgår från en hermeneutiskt metodansats och ett socialkonstruktivistiskt perspektiv, där normer och förväntningar ses som socialt konstruerade. För att analysera deltagarnas upplevelser och erfarenheter används teorierna om stigma, emotionssociologi, livsloppsperspektivet och performativitet. Datainsamlingen har genomförts genom kvalitativa semistrukturerade intervjuer i kombination med skriftliga svar från barnfria kvinnor. Det insamlade materialet analyserades tematiskt och bildade fem teman som låg till grund för en djupgående hermeneutisk tolkning.   Resultaten visar att kvinnorna upplever en ökad samhällelig acceptans för barnfrihet, samtidigt som ålder och tidpunkt i livet har betydelse för hur kvinnorna upplever denna acceptans. Studien visar även att kvinnorna är nöjda med sina livsval och bemöter samhälleliga föreställningar om ånger, ensamhet och meningsfullhet med ett omvänt perspektiv. 

This study examines how childless women in upper middle age have experienced their life choices throughout their lives, and how they relate to societal notions of childlessness. The aim is to create a deeper understanding of the women's individual experiences and experiences in relation to societal norms, and to make visible how they themselves view the notions of regret, loneliness and a meaningful life.   The study is based on a hermeneutic methodological approach and a social constructivist perspective, where norms and expectations are seen as socially constructed. To analyze the participants' experiences and experiences, the theories of stigma, sociology of emotions, the life course perspective and performativity are used. Data collection was carried out through qualitative semi-structured interviews and written responses from childless women. The collected material was analyzed thematically and formed five themes that formed the basis for an in-depth hermeneutic interpretation.   The results show that women experience increased societal acceptance of childlessness, while age and time in life play a role in how women experience this acceptance. The study also shows that women are satisfied with their life choices and view societal notions of regret, loneliness and meaningfulness with a reversed perspective.
