Getting It Right from the Start : A Literature Review on the Effects of Teaching Phonological Awareness in the Early School Years (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this literature review was to examine previous research on the effects of teaching phonological awareness to students in the early school years. The research question we based our study on was: Which factors were identified in previous research as predictors of development of students' phonological awareness? The work process started with systemic searches in various databases to collect relevant articles addressing our research question. Once nine articles had been selected, we conducted a thematic analyse to identify recurring patterns within the literature. The patterns formed as the basis for the themes are presented in the results section. The most significant findings indicate that phonological awareness instructions are most effective when they are introduced early, delivered in a systematic and structured manner, and if the students have access to different teaching methods. Furthermore, it is essential that the teachers have adequate knowledge of the phonological structure of the language and the ability to translate this knowledge into practical teaching.
