Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate which discourses emerge in preschool teachers’ talk about their teaching in preschool. The study specifically focuses on analyzing the preschool teachers´ language use and how this contributes to different understandings of teaching in preschool.

A qualitative study in the form of three focus group discussions was conducted with a total of nine participating preschool teachers. To gain a deeper understanding of the discourses that emerge around teaching, the study is based on a social constructionist perspective. The empirical material is analyzed using discourse analysis, inspired by selected concepts from discursive psychology.

The results highlight various discourses on teaching based on the preschool teachers´ talk in the focus group discussions. The preschool teachers present similar teaching strategies and goals in their descriptions of teaching. They describe the relational aspect and children’s interests as significant in the preschool teachers´ teaching. However, the results indicate that preschool teachers´ teaching is hindered by organizational factors. At the same time, the preschool teachers describe their role as crucial for enabling teaching to take place. The study concludes that teaching is difficult to interpret, as the curriculum allows for broad individual interpretations.
