"Behind Every Sentence Is a Young Person Who, with the Right Support, Can Still Choose a Different Path" – A Qualitative Study on Social Workers’ Perspectives on Change-Oriented Practice in Youth Service

This study explores social workers’ perspectives on change-oriented practice within youth service, a community sanction for young offenders in Sweden. Using a qualitative method and semi-structured interviews with seven social workers in western Sweden, the study analyses how motivation, alliance, and resources influence the ability to carry out meaningful change work. The analysis was conducted with a thematic approach and a hermeneutic perspective. Theoretical frameworks of Sense of Coherence (SOC) and Labeling Theory were used to deepen the understanding of the participants’ descriptions. The results show that social workers’ personal motivation, the alliance between worker and youth, and access to adequate resources are crucial for enabling change. Interestingly, the mandatory nature of the intervention is not necessarily a barrier but can instead offer structure and foster responsibility. The study highlights both challenges and opportunities within youth service, offering new insights into how social workers approach their role in working with young offenders.

Denna studie undersöker socialarbetares perspektiv på förändringsinriktat arbete inom ungdomstjänst. Med en kvalitativ metod och semistrukturerade intervjuer med sju socialarbetare i Västsverige, analyseras hur faktorer som motivation, allians och resurser påverkar möjligheterna att bedriva förändringsinriktat arbete med unga lagöverträdare. Analysen genomfördes med en tematisk ansats och en hermeneutisk utgångspunkt. Teorierna KASAM och stämplingsteori användes för att fördjupa förståelsen av respondenternas beskrivningar. Resultaten visar att socialarbetarnas egen motivation, alliansen mellan socialarbetaren och ungdomen samt tillgång till resurser är avgörande för att möjliggöra förändring. Det framträder också att insatsens tvingande karaktär inte nödvändigtvis utgör ett hinder, utan kan bidra till struktur och ansvarstagande. Studien belyser både hinder och möjligheter inom ungdomstjänst och bidrar med nya perspektiv på hur socialarbetare förhåller sig till sitt uppdrag i arbetet med unga lagöverträdare.
