Krimstics – does probation truly break the vicious cycle? : A qualitative study on probation officers and former clients experience of the Krimstics method (English)
Abstract [en]

Within the Swedish probation service, there is an increasing need för evidence-based ant effective interventions to prevent recidivism and promote client rehabilitation. To address these needs the Krimstics method has been implemented with the aim of strengthening individuals’ motivation for lasting behavioral change. Nevertheless, significant questions remain regarding the method's actual impact on clients’ readiness and ability to engage in the process of change. Furthermore, there is a lack of in-depth understanding of how probation officers experience the practical application of the method in their daily work. Through purposive sampling and semi-structured interviews with five former probation clients and seven active probation officers, findings indicate that the relationship between client and officer, as well as the client’s intrinsic motivation, are crucial to the method’s effectiveness. Krimstics is perceived as a supportive tool that can foster reflection and accountability, though its impact is limited when motivation or individual adaptation is lacking. The results also show that structural barriers, such as lack of resources and high demands for standardization, may negatively affect the method’s implementation. The analysis was conducted using thematic methodology and interpreted from a hermeneutic perspective, in relation to labeling theory and empowerment theory. The conclusion prove that while Krimstics has potential as a relapse-preventive method, its success depends on a trust-based interaction between probation officer and client, as well as the ability to tailor the approach to individual needs.
