Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

There are vast amounts of electronic waste across the globe. A significant portion of this waste consists of routers, specifically household routers. This study demonstrates that it is possible, using relatively simple tools and limited expertise, to access potentially sensitive information such as passwords and network names that may be stored on these devices.

The results show that information can remain on routers even after they have been discarded. If this information falls into the wrong hands, it could pose a potential security risk.

The study was carried out through two experiments: one using the UART circuit to gain access, and another in which information was retrieved via the router’s web interface. The question of who ultimately bears responsibility for any potential data leakage is also raised. Further research in this area should be conducted with a larger sample size and a variety of methods in order to deepen the understanding of this issue.
