Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Swedish organizations require stronger cybersecurity to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s cyber threats. The demand for cybersecurity specialists is increasing, yet applicants are often deemed underqualified, and there is a clear need for methods to assess actual skill levels. Many employers seek candidates with several years of professional experience, but struggle to find suitable applicants. This raises questions about whether résumés alone are sufficient selection tools, and whether the demands for work experience are reasonable.Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions are increasingly used by organizations both to attract future employees and to evaluate job seekers. The aim of this study is to investigate whether participation in a CTF competition can serve as an indicator of problem-solving ability and how this compares to the participants’ background qualifications. By using forensic evidence from a simulated cyberattack based on the MITRE ATT&CK framework, participants were asked to investigate the incident to explore whether a résumé alone is a sufficient recruitment tool. The findings show that professional experience alone cannot explain participant performance. Self-directed learning plays a crucial role, especially for those without prior work experience, in how well they perform during a CTF challenge. Furthermore, the results suggest that CTF competitions can be used as a complementary tool in recruitment processes to assess applicants’ problem-solving capabilities.
