Social workers’ experiences of secondary traumatic stress : Strategies for prevention and mitigation (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study aims to explore social workers’ experiences of the phenomenon of secondary traumatic stress (STS), as well as the strategies social workers use to prevent it. The research is based on a qualitative method, involving eleven semi-structured interviews with professional social workers holding a degree in social work. The interviews were conducted both at the participants’ workplaces and digitally via Teams. The material was then transcribed and thematically analyzed. The study adopts a hermeneutic scientific approach. To analyze the empirical data, Lazarus and Folkman’s theory of coping and Hochschild’s theory of emotional labor were applied. The results indicate that the concept of secondary traumatic stress is perceived as vague and is often misinterpreted as general work-related stress. Social workers’ experiences of STS vary depending on their level of knowledge, personal experiences, and exposure to clients’ trauma. The findings also highlight that coping strategies such as self-care, collegial support, and responsive leadership are essential for managing the emotional demands of the profession. Furthermore, the results suggest that professional experience facilitates boundary-setting and enhances self-awareness, which in turn may reduce the risk of developing secondary traumatic stress over time.
