Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Access to venture capital is a crucial factor for many startups, yet the ability to attract investment often varies depending on the company’s geographical location. The aim of this study is to investigate how geographical location affects the investment process and valuation of Swedish startups seeking venture capital.

The study is based on a qualitative research design with an abductive approach, including eleven semi-structured interviews with both investors and entrepreneurs.

The results show that soft factors – such as the entrepreneur’s drive, network, and team experience – play a central role in how investors evaluate startups. However, these signals are more difficult to interpret across geographical distance, which places companies in smaller regions at a disadvantage. The study also finds that local culture and limited knowledge of venture capital reduce the willingness among entrepreneurs outside major cities to actively seek funding. Venture capital investors also tend to invest in their proximity and increase valuations in financial clusters such as Stockholm.

The conclusion is that geography creates unequal conditions for capital acquisition, which may hinder the growth of startups in less central parts of the country
