Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Health promotion in higher education can positively influence students' health. Entering work-life, healthcare and social work professionals are at an increased risk of poor health. The aim was to describe how general health is associated with health-promoting resources, lifestyle factors, and social factors among final-year bachelor students in healthcare and social work programs and newly graduated healthcare and social work professionals. In addition, the aim was to compare the groups with excellent or very good health to the groups with good, fair, or poor health based on the assumption that better health is associated with health-promoting resources and lifestyle factors. Methods: Data from a web-based questionnaire were used. The questionnaire included questions about health, lifestyle factors, and instruments. Data were analyzed using chi-square, Mann-Whitney U, logistic regression, and Wilcoxon signed rank. Results: This study includes 343 students and 115 newly graduated healthcare and social work professionals. At both time points, the groups with excellent or very good general health had better health-promoting resources and lifestyle factors. Health and health-promoting resources did not significantly change between time points. Conclusion: Participants reporting excellent or very good health had higher healthpromoting resources and lifestyle factors, both during their final semester and one year after graduation. Health and health-promoting resources appeared stable during the 4transition to early work-life. Research to confirm this is needed. This indicates that health promotion during higher education and early work-life is important to ensure sustainable health and health-promoting resources throughout a person’s life.
