Abstract [en]

This study examines how social workers within municipal financial assistance services experience and manage emotional strain in their daily client work. Through qualitative interviews with eight social workers from various municipalities across Sweden, it becomes clear that intense emotional demands and complex client relations shape the profession. The respondents describe how encounters with individuals in vulnerable situations require empathy and clear boundary setting but also how systemic limitations often prevent them from providing the support that is genuinely needed.

The study’s findings reveal that recurring emotional challenges, limited resources, weak inter-agency collaboration, and organizational barriers contribute to stress and feelings of frustration. Many social workers experience an internal conflict between their personal values and the support they are actually able to offer within the boundaries of policy guidelines. To cope with this burden, they develop various strategies, such as emotional distancing, structured routines, and collegial support. The importance of present and supportive leadership is also highlighted as vital for long-term professional sustainability.

In conclusion, the study highlights how emotional labor within social services is both a central part of the professional role and a potential source of exhaustion, especially when there is insufficient space for reflection, support, or recovery. The study thus provides insight into both the challenges and protective strategies that characterize the everyday work of social workers in financial assistance.
