Abstract [en]

Early stage entrepreneurs often meet challenges like for example limited resources, which contributes to uncertainty and emotional pressure. Yet, still there are limited studies on how  individual resilience is sustained and developed while navigating the complex and uncertain terrain of early stage startup creation. Based on a comparative qualitative case study of four entrepreneurs operating in Sweden and Liberia, we examine the dynamic interplay between internal capacities such as motivation and resilience and external mechanisms, including networks and entrepreneurial ecosystems. The findings reveal that resilience is not a static trait but a dynamic process shaped through iterative learning, emotional regulation and strategic engagement with social and institutional support systems. Networking emerges as a core mechanism for accessing resources, refining business models and maintaining emotional balance, while the fit and functionality of entrepreneurial ecosystems significantly influence the pace and trajectory of early venture growth and establishment. The findings are summarized into the Early Venture Resilience Framework (EVRF), a conceptual framework that illustrates how motivation, individual resilience, networking and ecosystem engagement coalesce to build entrepreneurial resilience and support early-stage establishment and growth. This study contributes to entrepreneurship literature by providing a practical understanding of resilience as a dynamic and relational process. The undertaken research addresses a critical gap in how the interplay between individual resilience, networking and entrepreneurial ecosystems is conceptualized and experienced in the earliest stages of venture creation. These dimensions have often been studied separately which makes our key contribution in proposing a more interconnected and holistic perspective through the development of the Early Venture Resilience Framework (EVRF), which combines motivation, emotional regulation, strategic networking and ecosystem engagement into an integrated model that explains how nascent entrepreneurs build resilience to navigate uncertainty and move toward venture establishment and early growth.
