Abstract [en]

This study explored the process of becoming a hiker as an adult with no prior experience. Using qualitative content analysis, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight individuals who adopted hiking in adulthood. The study applied Self-Determination Theory and the Life Course Perspective to examine the interplay between intrinsic motivation, social influences, and life transitions in shaping hiking engagement. The findings revealed that becoming a hiker is a non-linear process influenced by external catalysts, such as health concerns, social encouragement, and major life changes. Initial engagement is often externally driven but evolves into an intrinsic motivation through increased competence, autonomy, and social relatedness. Nature plays a dual role, above mere facilitating, serving both as a catalyst for initial participation and a sustaining factor for long-term commitment. Additionally, hiking fosters physical and mental well-being, identity transformation, and community integration. The study contributes to public health research by highlighting the role of social support and environmental factors in sustaining outdoor physical activity.
