Nurses experiences of compassion fatigue : A general literature study (Esperanto)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Compassion fatigue is the interplay of burnout and secondarytraumatic stress, which risks affecting nurses in clinical care. The conditioncan lead to both physical and psychological impact as well as affect theability to empathize. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe nurses'experiences of their own compassion fatigue. Method: The study wasconducted as a general literature review with an inductive approach basedon twelve result articles from CINAHL, PubMed, and PsycINFO. Allarticles used qualitative method, and the data was analysed using Popenoe’sthree-step method for data analysis. Results: The results were thematizedinto three categories: affected nursing competence, affected job satisfaction, and a lack of work-life balance. Nurses experiencing compassion fatiguedescribed how their condition was affected by over-involvement in patients'situations and a lack of support in the work environment. The compassionfatigue led to distancing from patients, which impacted patient-centred careand patient safety. Nurses experienced a spillover effect into their privatelives, as sleep difficulties, isolation, and lack of self-care worsened thecompassion fatigue. Conclusion: Compassion fatigue among nursesnegatively affects quality of care, patient safety, and their own quality oflife. It arises from over-involvement in patients’ suffering and can lead tounempathetic and avoidant behaviour. Work environment, collegial support, staffing levels, and opportunities for recovery influence the risk. Animbalance between work and private life, including sleep problems and lackof self-care, worsens the condition.
