Women´s experiences of living with fibromyalgia : A general literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder characterized by long-term pain. Predominant symptoms are stiffness in muscles and joints, sleep problems, fatigue, mood swings, stress intolerance, headache, concentration, and memory difficulties. In fibromyalgia, there is a dysfunction in the central and peripheral nervous system, which leads to an impact on the pain-inhibiting system and, thus, the experience of pain. Aim: The aim was to highlight women's experiences of living with fibromyalgia. Method: The method was a general literature study. The study used ten result articles, all of which were qualitative. The articles were from the databases CINAHL and PubMed. The data was processed according to Popenoe's analysis method. Results: Four categories were identified: (1) Physical ability, (2) Loneliness, (3) Identity change, (4) Social relationships. Conclusion: Fibromyalgia affects daily life and causes constant strain. Women with fibromyalgia constantly need to adapt their lives to the symptoms of the disease. Women often experience loneliness, as the disease makes it difficult to understand both those around them and healthcare professionals. For women with fibromyalgia, understanding the disease is crucial to being able to live with it in a manageable way.
