Psychosocial Mechanisms Associated with Gym-Goers’ Intentions to Use Performance-Enhancing Substances : A Quantitative Study on How Psychosocial Factors Are Associated with Doping Intentions (English)
Abstract [en]
The aim of the study was to examine intentions to use performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) among gym-goers and to analyze how attitudes, subjective norms, and moral disengagement influence these intentions, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior and Bandura’s theory of moral disengagement. The study tested two hypotheses: 1) that moral disengagement mediates the relationship between subjective norms and the intention to use performance-enhancing drugs, and 2) that moral disengagement mediates the relationship between attitudes and the intention to use performance-enhancing drugs. A total of 97 participants, 55 women and 42 men, were recruited and completed a digital survey that included the Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire and questions based on the Theory of Planned Behavior and moral disengagement. The data were analyzed using two mediation analyses in the statistical software JASP. The results showed that attitudes and subjective norms are the most important factors for the intention to use performance-enhancing drugs. Attitudes had a direct effect, whereas subjective norms influenced intention both directly and indirectly through moral disengagement. These findings partially align with previous research. The results indicate that some of the hypotheses were confirmed and are partially consistent with prior studies. Future research is recommended to investigate long-term effects and further explore moral disengagement within the gym context.
