Women's experiences of self-care with polycystic ovary syndrome : A general literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a disease that affects women's metabolism and endocrine systems. The course of the disease is influenced by lifestyle choices and therefore self-care is of great importance in treating the disease. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to illustrate the impacts on women's experiences of performing self-care with PCOS. Method: The method was a general literature study. In the result three qualitative articles, five quantitative articles and one article with mixed methods from the databases CINAHL, PubMed and PsycInfo were used. The data was analyzed using Popenoe's data analysis. Results: Healthcare professionals lack of knowledge of PCOS and self-care treatments impacts women’s ability to perform self-care. The women want to meet healthcare professionals who have a holistic and multidisciplinary approach which impacts women to receive motivational support to make lifestyle changes. Women with PCOS experience that the symptoms of the disease have an adverse impact on their body image, which results in an unfavourable impact on the women’s self-care. Conclusion: Healthcare professionals require more training in how to support, motivate and educate women in their self-care. Continuing research about what impacts women’s experiences of performing self-care with PCOS is needed to gain a deeper understanding of how healthcare professionals should meet, treat and offer care to women with PCOS.
