2025 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to shed light on former senior competition riders' experiences of dropping out from competition life, and to highlight the psychological phenomena that are linked to this process. The participants were ten seniors of different ages, who had left competition and equestrian sports for various reasons. The study has used a qualitative method with abductive approach and semi-structured interviews based on an interview guide. The results answered the questions about what perceived psychological causes, challenges and change of self-image the participants may have experienced. They described inner conflicts, stress, self-image, lack of motivation, economy, lack of time and the need for various support factors. Three main themes were developed through Braun and Clarke's method, such as "Self-image no longer correct", "The importance of support and resources" and "Increased performance demands and inner conflicts". The results have been supported by Bronfenbrenner's PPCT theory model and adapted for drop-out in senior competition riders and their development, interactions and changes over time. The study also highlights various psychological challenges that can provide valuable insights for developing support strategies to maintain participation.
