The role of enjoyment in the relationship between parental support, coach-athlete relationship and intention to drop out among youth team sports athletes (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether enjoyment mediated the connection between coach-athlete relationship, support from parents and intention to dropout among youth team sports athletes. The self-determination theory (SDT) was used as a theoretical framework as previous research found a correlation between the satisfaction of basic psychological needs and enjoyment and intention to dropout among adolescents (Back et al., 2022; Quested et al., 2013). Based on the purpose, two hypotheses were formulated: 1) Enjoyment mediates the connection between coach-athlete relationship and intention to dropout, where a better relationship between coach and athlete is expected to lead to a higher degree of enjoyment and thus reduced intention to dropout, and 2) Enjoyment mediates the connection between support from parents and intention to dropout, where better support from parents is expected to lead to a higher degree of enjoyment and in turn reduced intention to dropout. A total of 101 team athletes aged 15–20 years participated (M=16.65, SD=1.42), of which 52 were female and 49 were male. The study used a cross-sectional design, and the collection of data was done using digital questionnaires. To obtain a result, two separate mediation analyses were made. Based on the analyses, it became clear that enjoyment had a statistically significant mediating role in the relationship between support of parents and coach-athlete relationship and intention to dropout.
