Aggression and antisocial behaviors in team sports: The mediating role of moral disengagement (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate which moral disengagement mechanisms predict antisocial behavior towards teammates and opponents. The study also aimed to examine whether the effect of aggression on antisocial behavior towards teammates and opponents is mediated by moral disengagement. A quantitative cross-sectional design was used, and data were collected through a digital survey. Participants included men and women over the age of 18 competing in soccer, handball, ice hockey, floorball, and basketball at the senior level. A total of 123 participants took part in the study. Based on previous research, three hypotheses were formulated 1) the mechanism conduct reconstrual predict antisocial behavior towards both teammates and opponents, 2) moral disengagement mediates the relationship between aggression and antisocial behavior towards teammates and 3) moral disengagement mediates the relationship between aggression and antisocial behavior towards opponents. Hypothesis 1 was confirmed through a multiple regression analysis. The results showed that the mechanism conduct reconstrual was the only predictor of antisocial behavior towards both teammates and opponents. Hypotheses 2 and 3 were confirmed through a mediation analysis. The results demonstrated that moral disengagement acts as a mediator between aggression and antisocial behavior. These results contribute to an increased understanding.
