Our insidious addiction: An Explorative Study on the Influence of Mobile Phone Notifications on Excessive Usage Tendencies

Abstract [en]

This study explores the impact of smartphone notifications on user tendencies toward excessive smartphone usage, aiming to address the growing issue of smartphone addiction. The relationship between smartphone notifications and user behaviour are studied, focusing on habitual use, emotional responses, and self-regulation strategies. Through qualitative interviews with twelve participants, this research examines the relationship between notifications and habitual phone use, drawing on the framework of Pavlovian conditioning to understand compulsive checking behaviours. The findings reveal a significant discrepancy between perceived and actual phone usage, driven by notifications acting as powerful triggers. This study contributes valuable insights into the psychological and behavioural mechanisms behind smartphone overuse, offering potential frameworks for further future research.
