Bakgrund: Bröstcancergen 1 (BRCA1) är en gen vars mutation är relaterad till en ökad risk för bröst- och äggstockscancer. Det rekommenderas att kvinnor med BRCA1 genomgår profylaktisk salpingooforektomi och mastektomi efter avslutad reproduktion. Den profylaktiska kirurgin följs av biverkningar som påverkar individens hela hälsa, där fysiska symtom relaterade till kirurgisk menopaus samverkar med psykiska upplevelser kopplade till identitet, kroppsbild och förlorad reproduktiv förmåga. Aktuell forskning visar på en kompetensbrist inom vården samt bristande information och stöd vid profylaktisk kirurgi, vilket understryker behovet av att ta del av kvinnors erfarenheter för att förbättra vårdprocessen. Syfte: Syftet var att belysa kvinnors erfarenheter före och efter profylaktisk salpingooforektomi och mastektomi vid bärande av ärftlig patogen BRCA1. Metod: En allmän litteraturstudie som inkluderade fem kvalitativa artiklar och sju kvantitativa artiklar. Resultat: Resultatet utformade tre huvudkategorier: Tankar och känslor inför profylaktisk kirurgi, tankar och känslor efter profylaktisk kirurg och vikten av information och stöd. Det framgick att kvinnors beslut att genomgå profylaktisk kirurgi grundade sig i en rädsla för att dö och viljan att kunna vara en del av sina barns liv. Majoriteten var tillfreds efter att ha genomgått profylaktisk kirurgi men uppgav biverkningar relaterat till kirurgisk menopaus och kosmetiskt resultat vilket i sin tur påverkade kroppsbild, sexuell funktion och den psykiska hälsan. Kvinnorna belyste bristen och behovet av tydlig information och stöd under hela vårdprocessen. Konklusion: Förbättringsarbete krävs avseende information, stöd och behandling av komplikationer. Genom att belysa kvinnornas erfarenheter kan omvårdnaden förbättras för patientgruppen.

Background: Breast cancer gene 1 (BRCA1) is a gene of which the mutation is related to an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. It is recommended that women with BRCA1 undergo prophylactic salpingo- oophorectomy and mastectomy after completion of reproduction. Prophylactic surgery is followed by side effects that affect the individual's overall health, where physical symptoms related to surgical menopause interact with psychological experiences connected to identity, body image, and the loss of reproductive ability. Current research reveals a lack of healthcare competence, as well as insufficient information and support regarding prophylactic surgery, emphasizing the need to include women's experiences to improve the care process. Aim: The aim was to highlight women’s experiences before and after prophylactic salpingo-oophorectomy and mastectomy when carrying the hereditary pathogen BRCA1. Method: A general literature review that included five qualitative articles and seven quantitative articles. Result: The result formed three main categories: Thoughts and feelings before prophylactic surgery, Thoughts and feelings after prophylactic surgery and The importance of information and support. It emerged that women’s decisions to undergo prophylactic surgery were based on a fear of dying and the desire to be part of their children’s lives. The majority were satisfied after undergoing prophylactic surgery but reported side effects related to surgical menopause and cosmetic outcome, which in turn affected body image, sexual function and mental health. Women highlighted the lack and need for clear information and support throughout the process. Conclusion: Improvement work is needed regarding information, support and treatment of side effects. By highlighting women’s experiences, care can be improved for this patient group.
