Patients' experiences of preoperative care in cases of anxiety : A general Literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Preoperative anxiety is a common phenomenon amongpatients who are to undergo surgery. Preoperative anxiety contributes to anegative perception of health in patients in both Swedish and internationalcontexts. The current state of research shows a clear connection betweenpreoperative anxiety and postoperative complications. Research also showsthat preoperative anxiety can be alleviated with the help of adequate nursinginterventions. The patients' perspective and experiences of preoperative careare of interest to highlight. Purpose: The purpose was to highlight patients'experiences of preoperative care related to anxiety. Method: A generalliterature study in which four qualitative and eight quantitative articles wereincluded. Results: Patients' experiences were summarized using four maincategories: "Nursing's role in increasing understanding of the care processand reducing anxiety", "nursing-based information exchange that alleviatesor increases anxiety", "nursing's importance of social support and presencein managing anxiety", "nursing measures with diverting techniques toalleviate anxiety". Many patients found that care that helped themunderstand their own context worked to relieve anxiety. Information was acentral concept where the patients told us that information could bothalleviate anxiety but also increase it. Support and presence from healthcareprofessionals was described as effective in cases of anxiety. The resultsshowed that anxiety could be alleviated through diverting activities. Conclusion: Preoperative information could both alleviate and increaseanxiety. The care of patients who experience preoperative anxiety shouldtherefore be individualized. Further research into which nursing measuresare perceived as effective could be beneficial for the science of nursing, nursing care and the patient.
