Abstract [en]

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that affects millions ofpeople worldwide. Diabetes mellitus can lead to serious complications, causing the person both mental and physical suffering. Foot ulcers are acomplication of diabetes mellitus and can make it difficult for the person tolive a dignified life, lead to a reduced quality of life and contribute to theexperience of social isolation due to limited mobility. Research focuses onthe medical treatment of already developed foot ulcers, which creates gapsin knowledge regarding effective preventive nursing interventions. Aim:The aim was to illustrate preventive nursing interventions for foot ulcers inpeople with diabetes mellitus. Method: A general literature study, based on12 scientific articles from two databases, CINAHL and PubMed. Results:Three categories were identified: Identification of risk factors, Healthpromotion education, and Continuous follow-up. Conclusion: Nursinginterventions were essential to prevent the development of foot ulcers inpeople with diabetes mellitus. Identification of risk factors and healthpromotion education of people with diabetes mellitus and family memberswas essential in preventing foot ulcers in people with diabetes mellitus. Thenurse had a central function by performing foot examinations and givingindividualized recommendations to promote self-care. Regular follow-upwas identified as an important factor in reducing the risk of seriouscomplications. More research on preventive nursing interventions is neededto clarify the effect of these interventions.
