Abstract
Background: Prostate cancer is the most diagnosed cancer among men
worldwide affecting both patients and their families. Partners of individuals
living with prostate cancer often take on caregiving role, which plays a role
in the patient's overall care and well-being. Understanding the experiences
of these partners provides holistic and person-centered care within the
context of prostate cancer treatment and support. Objective: The aim was to
describe the experiences of partners of people living with prostate cancer.
Method: A general literature review was conducted, synthesizing 13 peer-
reviewed articles. Results: The literature study identified three categories
describing partners' experiences living with a prostate cancer patient: The
Partner’s experience as an individual, The Partner’s experience in the
Relationship, and The Partner’s experience of healthcare. The findings
indicate that partners experience significant emotional and psychological
stress, the diseases often strain the couple’s relationship—through
communication difficulties and emotional isolation and lack of information
and support from healthcare providers. Conclusions: The study highlights
the need for person-centered care involving partners in the treatment
process, providing them with appropriate emotional support and
information. Addressing these needs can improve the well-being of both
patients and their partners, enhancing the quality of care during the cancer
journey.
