Patients' experiences of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in leukemia : A general literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Leukemia is a malignant blood disease that affects stem cells in the bone marrow. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the primary treatment used for leukemia and can cause serious complications. Nurses´ responsibilities include medical-technical care, symptom relief, and meeting patients´ need for support. Aim: The aim of the study was to highlight patients’ experiences of undergoing stem cell transplantation for leukemia. Method: The method was a general literature review based on both quantitative and qualitative studies to map the knowledge area. Data analysis was conducted through coding of data units that addressed the aim, which shaped the categories of the results. Results: The results were divided into four categories based on patients´ experiences: Experiences of physical strain, Experiences of psychological strain, Existential experiences, and Social experiences. Patients with leukemia undergoing HSCT experience multiple physical and psychological strains such as pain, depression, anxiety, and fear. The existential health, as well as perspectives on life and death, changed both positively and negatively. The treatment was perceived to alter social relationships in the patients’ surroundings and had a limiting impact on their life situation. Conclusion: The results describe patients´ experiences from the perspective of the four dimensions of health, which often have a correlation with one another. To alleviate patient suffering, it is essential to approach patients from a holistic perspective that considers all dimensions of health.
