Nurses' attitudes towards sexual health conversations : A general literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Sexual health is well-being in relation to sexuality, which is an important part of human identity. Sexual dysfunction can occur as a result of various medical conditions and treatments, but it can also occur independently of these. Sexual dysfunctions are complex and have amultifactorial etiology. Nurses have a responsibility to talk to patients about sexual health, sexuality and sexual dysfunction. However, few nurses routinely initiate these conversations with patients, and an important aspect that influences whether nurses initiate conversations is the individual nurse's attitudes. Aim: The aim was to elucidate nurses' attitudes towards discussing sexual health with patients. Method: A general literature review with a qualitative approach. The study was based on nine articles, of which five were quantitative and four were qualitative. All articles were quality reviewed and thoroughly analyzed to ensure a high scientific standard. The data from the final articles were coded according to a framework and fourcategories were found. Results: The four categories analyzed were: ‘Sexual health talk is an important part of nursing care’, ‘Sexual health talk is not my responsibility’, ‘Sexual health talk should be avoided’, and ‘The patient is not interested in sexual health talk’, and highlighted nurses' attitudes towards talking about sexual health with patients. Conclusion: Nurses havevarying attitudes that influence their willingness to engage in conversationsabout sexual health with patients.
