Abstract [en]

Background: People with hearing loss can communicate in different waysdepending on the degree of hearing loss, they can either communicate orallyor using sign language. Effective communication between nurses andpatients is essential to ensure mutual understanding. For patients withhearing loss, communication can become a barrier that limits their ability tofully participate in healthcare decisions. Aim: The aim of the study was tohighlight the experiences of communication in healthcare among patientswith hearing loss. Method: The study was conducted as a general literaturereview, consisting of ten articles, seven of which used a qualitative method, and three used a mixed method. Results: The lack of effectivecommunication between healthcare professionals and patients often led topatients not receiving care tailored to their needs. Ineffectivecommunication could result in misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment.Healthcare professionals' lack of knowledge about hearing loss sometimesled to uncomfortable situations for hearing-impaired patients, which couldhave been avoided. Conclusion/implication: It was found that patients withhearing loss often experienced communication difficulties with healthcareprofessionals. Healthcare professionals need to be made aware of how toeffectively communicate with hearing-impaired patients to ensure theyreceive the care they are entitled to.
