Relatives experiences of assisted peritoneal dialysis at home : A general literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

PD genomförs vanligtvis i patientens hem.

Abstract [en]

Background: Chronic kidney failure affects the kidneys' ability to excrete waste substances, maintain blood oxygenation, regulate blood pressure, regulate the blood's PH value and fluid balance in the body. Peritoneal dialysis is a treatment method for patients with chronic kidney failure and replaces the kidneys' purifying function of the blood. A sterile glucose solution is introduced into the peritoneal cavity to filter out toxins, electrolytes and excess fluid. PD is usually performed at the patient’s home. Purpose: The purpose was to shed light on the experiences of relatives of assisted peritoneal dialysis at home. Method: The method applied was a general literature study based on ten scientific articles that were analyzed through content analysis. The articles were qualitative method, quantitative method and mixed method. The searches were made in the databases CINAHL, PubMed and APA PsycInfo. Results: Three categories were identified: Experiences of concern, Experiences of a changed everyday life and Experiences of participation. Relatives experienced worry, anxiety, exhaustion and frustration due to PD. Relatives' everyday life changed as a result of supporting the patient with PD. They felt that there was a lack of information about PD treatment from the healthcare system. Relatives could experience anger towards the patient but also a sense of meaning in being involved in the care. Conclusion: Relatives of patients with PD at home experience both negative and positive emotions related to supporting the patient with PD. Relatives need increased support from healthcare professionals to cope with the stresses that PD has.
