Non-pharmacological self-care strategies in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease characterized by permanent airway obstruction that leads to an irreversible reduction in lung function. In 2019, 12% of the world's population was affected by COPD. How everyday life is affected is individual, depending on the stage of the disease and its symptoms. Aim: The study aimed to describe non-pharmacological self-care strategies. Method: The method was a general literature study with an inductive approach where previously published research was compiled. The compilation resulted in five categories of self-care strategies that patients use. Results: The results highlighted several strategies that patients with COPD use in their everyday lives to reduce the impact of the disease. The results were presented in five categories: avoidance of triggering factors, exercises to facilitate breathing, adaptation of activities, dietary changes, and support from relatives. Conclusion: Self-care strategies are the basis for the patient's ability to manage everyday life. Increased ability to self-care benefits the patient's well-being and reduces the risks of exacerbations and increased need for care.
