Patients experiences of living with post-stroke aphasia : A general literature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Aphasia is a medical condition which means that the linguistic capacity declines. Aphasia is a common consequence following a stroke which can impact the affected people’s ability to communicate, which can negatively affect the quality of life. Aim: The purpose was to describe patients experiences of living with post-stroke aphasia. Method: The study was conducted as a general literature study with an inductive approach. Twelve articles were reviewed and compiled into topics. Results: Three topics were identified: experiences of healthcare, experiences of relationships and experiences of mental health. Patients have described negative experiences regarding the care, such as deficient knowledge in healthcare workers. Relationships with others were affected which often was experienced as stressful. Patients have often experienced deteriorated mental health following their aphasia, and that personal coping strategies and support from others was important for the recovery process. Conclusion/implication: Life changes drastically after being affected by aphasia. Patients experience a lack of adequate information regarding the condition. Healthcare workers must have the right knowledge about care for patients with post-stroke aphasia to be able to adapt the care based on the patient’s specific needs.
