Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to gain deeper insight into the affordances that thepreschool playground’s physical environment offers the children’s play. Thestudy explored the question: What types of play do different areas of thepreschool playground invite? To answer this question, three participantobservations were conducted at a preschool. The study is based on aqualitative method with elements of both micro ethnography and the mosaicmethod. The analysis was based on a thematic analysis with anenvironmental psychology perspective and Hughes’ (2002) approach to playtypes. The data collections consisted of audio files, notes and images. Theresults show that the preschool playground offered the children a varietydifferent types of play and play patterns, and that the participating childrenused a variety of available resources to practice their play, especially innatural environments such as woodlands and green spaces. The study alsoindicates that places where play lacks a predetermined purpose are invitingfor the children.
