Abstract [en]

This report explores sustainable manufacturing practices in battery technology, with a focuson sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) as a potential alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries.Lithium extraction has raised environmental concerns, such as resource depletion, pollution,and geopolitical risks. In contrast, sodium-ion batteries provide a more sustainable and costeffective option, as sodium is abundant and does not require rare earth materials like cobalt.The study evaluates the environmental impact of SIBs, looking at their lifecycle, benefits, andchallenges, including issues like lower energy density and long-term stability. Using acombination of literature review and experimental data, the findings suggest that sodium-ionbatteries could play a key role in large-scale energy storage, particularly for grid stabilizationand the integration of renewable energy sources. The report concludes with recommendationsfor improving energy density, developing recycling technologies, and scaling up productionto support the shift toward sustainable energy storage solutions. These findings offer valuableinsights for researchers and industry stakeholders looking to enhance battery technology andreduce environmental impacts.
