How do Swedish banks assess companies ESG when granting credit. : A comparison between industry and the service sector. (English)
Abstract [en]

Titel: How do Swedish banks assess companies ESG when granting credit. A comparison between industry and the service sector.

Keywords: ESG, sustainable development, lending, sustainability risk, the industrial sector, the service sector.

Research questions: How do Swedish banks assess ESG when lending to the industrial sector compared to the service sector?

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to describe the banks lending from an ESG perspective. An analysis between companies in industry and the service sector must be done to evaluate whether there are differences and similarities in credit provision between the two sectors. By developing a conceptual model understanding is created.

Theoretical frame: The theoretical frame of reference provides an understanding of sustainable development in the form of ESG and how banks assess companies in a lending process. The study has mainly been based on information asymmetry, the stakeholder theory and principal – agent theory.

Method: The study has been carried out through an abductive research approach through a qualitative research strategy. Empirical data has been collected through semi-structured interviews and the analysis has been carried out using the Gioia method. Empirical data has been collected through semi-structured interviews with eleven respondents from Swedish banks that work with lending to companies. The Gioia method has been used as an analysis model for the collected empirical data.

Conclusion: The first conclusion of the study shows that there are differences and similarities in how banks handle the credit granting process to the sectors we investigated. At first the respondents refer to similarities, with a more in-depth discussion. The differences also emerge which are mainly considered to be because the industries are differently filled with risk. The second conclusion states that there are differences in how banks manage ESG in the selected industries. And that banks today are unable to make a complete sustainability based assessment on ESG for any of the selected industries. The environment and the social dimension are what the banks most commonly examine, but there is less examination of the governance dimension. The third conclusion that the study draws is that banks are an important part of the transition to a greener society.
